JEMIMA SARA & BLEUR GALLERY OPENS TOILET INSTALLATION: "RECLAIMING THE TOILET”

Location: BLEUR Gallery toilets, 62-64 Baker Street, London.

Created around Frieze week in partnership with BLEUR Gallery, artist Jemima Sara returns to the toilet, reimagining the overlooked space as a canvas for expression. This installation is a continuation of Jemima Sara’s longstanding fascination with toilets, not just as physical spaces, but as cultural, social, and political arenas.

The installation embraces a graffiti style, featuring bold colours, expressive line drawings of figurative characters, and deliberately raw, unfiltered text. There are spelling mistakes within the work as this is a reflection of Jemima Sara’s dyslexia, and are not corrected, but celebrated as part of the work’s honesty and humour. They lend a sense of immediacy and authenticity, echoing the way graffiti speaks directly and without polish. With slogans like “Women’s art belongs in the loo. More viewing time” and “We must claim this space”, “Here she sits, unbothered”, “Revolution starts in small places”, Jemima calls attention to the persistent invisibility of female artist in the art world. The installation asks: If women’s work isn’t given space in galleries, can the toilet become the new white cube? Blending satire with sincerity, Jemima’s work reclaims the toilet as a space of playful disruption, and unapologetic visibility. It’s funny, colourful & it demands to be seen.
